Triphala Powder: Ayurveda's classic three-fruit digestive blend, explained

Triphala's equal-parts blend of three native Indian fruits has anchored Ayurvedic digestive wellness for centuries. Here is what goes into it, and why blend consistency is everything.

🟤

Triphala — literally "three fruits" — is arguably the single most recognisable formula in Ayurvedic medicine, a traditional blend of amalaki (Indian gooseberry, or amla), bibhitaki and haritaki combined in equal proportion. Where most of the ingredients in this series are single botanicals, triphala is a compound formula, which changes the sourcing and quality conversation in an important way: getting triphala right depends as much on blend consistency as it does on the quality of any one component fruit.

What goes into it

Amalaki, or Indian gooseberry, is the most widely recognised of the three, prized in its own right for its tart, vitamin-C-rich profile. Bibhitaki and haritaki are less familiar outside Ayurvedic circles but are equally central to the formula, each contributing its own astringent, tannin-rich character. Traditional preparation combines the three in strict 1:1:1 proportion — no fruit is meant to dominate — and that balance is what gives triphala its distinctive tart, astringent profile, different from any of the three fruits taken alone.

How it's processed

We mill each fruit separately to spec before blending, rather than co-drying or co-milling the three together, specifically so the finished 1:1:1 ratio can be verified and held consistent batch after batch. This is a meaningfully more controlled approach than blending from pre-ground bulk material of uncertain individual composition, and it is the main reason triphala quality varies so much between suppliers — the blend is only as reliable as the process used to combine it. Every component and the finished blend is graded, tested for moisture and microbial counts, run through metal detection and inspected again before sealing.

Grades and specifications

Our triphala powder is supplied at food / nutraceutical grade, milled to 80–120 mesh with custom sizes available, and held to a moisture ceiling of 7%, for private label or bulk supply. It carries a brown colour, a sour, fruity, faintly astringent odour and a tart, astringent, mildly sour taste — a genuinely distinctive sensory profile that reflects the balanced three-fruit composition rather than any single dominant note.

Where it's used

Capsules, tablets and supplements are triphala's dominant application, almost entirely within digestive-wellness formulations, which remains its core traditional-use category. It also appears in functional foods and beverages targeting digestive support, and remains a staple across broader Ayurvedic and herbal blends, often paired with other digestive-focused botanicals like trikatu.

Why buyers choose it

Triphala's appeal for a formulator is the combination of an extremely well-known, well-trusted traditional formula with a genuinely distinctive flavour and functional profile that a single-ingredient product cannot replicate. Because the formula itself is so widely recognised — arguably more so than any single Ayurvedic botanical, ashwagandha aside — a triphala-based product carries built-in category credibility that reduces the education burden on the brand marketing it.

Notes for formulators

The tart, astringent flavour profile is triphala's defining sensory characteristic and, for most digestive-wellness formats, is treated as a feature rather than something to mask — consumers familiar with triphala often expect and look for that characteristic tartness as a sign of authenticity. For less traditional-facing formats, pairing with a mild sweetener or complementary fruit flavour can round out the astringency without eliminating it entirely.

Because triphala is a blend, batch-to-batch consistency depends entirely on your supplier's process discipline, not just raw-material quality — this is worth asking about directly (see the companion sourcing guide for exactly what to check) rather than assuming any triphala powder labelled 1:1:1 was actually produced that way.
